In my experience, Bernd uses natural or untreated silvertip 3 band. I had a 3 band D01 bulb (26mm) and it took much time to break in. Around 40 lathers but it was a very utilitarian brush. Excellent lather application but a bit more backbone than I care for or need. So if you like softness but still want density, try his hybrid or fan shape and maybe do a Unique density so you get the right amount of hug while face lathering.
To answer you question, the silvertip was a tad scritchy in the beginning but they did smooth out (individual hairs). They were not gel tip 3 band knots by the way.
