I had my first experience with a Gold Dollar this Friday. When I got it, it was still shaving hair, but since it is from a customer, I proceeded to reset the bevel, as is my normal procedure - this way any shortcomings can be attributed solely to me
I know there is a lot of controversy around these - some have reported them to be absolute garbage, and some have raved about their smooth shaves, so this was interesting for me. I started off on the DMT Fine, and within about 10 minutes, had everything the way I wanted it, then proceeded to the Chosera 400 and 800, then on to the Shapton Pros from 1K up to 30K, and finished with the .125 CBN.
While the spine straightness was less than desirable, I thought the actual steel was certainly of high enough quality (I had my reservations, initially). Because of the general presence of poorly ground spines, I have taken to using my 1x6 stones for razors lately. It just saves a whole lot of aggravation. The temper on the GD was actually somewhere in the 62-63 range, according to the feedback on the Shapton Pros.
My efforts were well rewarded by the shave - smoooooth and effortless, and I ended up with a full 3 pass shave. Overall, I'd call this gold dollar a .125 million dollar shave!
